WHEN IS IT TIME TO SEE A JACKSONVILLE SPINE EXPERT?
Back pain is a common condition — you may develop aches and pains from a pulled muscle, poor posture, or even sleeping in an abnormal position. In these cases, your pain probably resolves within a few days with rest and home care. But persistent or worsening back pain could be a sign of a serious spinal condition that requires medical care.
When is it time to seek advice from a spine specialist for your back pain? If you’re experiencing the following symptoms, call Integrity Spine and Orthopedics to schedule a consultation with one of our spine experts.
- Severe or worsening pain
- Pain that lasts longer than a few weeks
- Pain that interrupts sleep at night
- Pain that prevents you from performing daily activities
- Pain that radiates down an arm or leg
- Weakness, numbness or tingling that spreads down an arm or leg
You should also see an orthopedic spine specialist if you develop back or neck pain after a car crash, fall, sports accident, or another traumatic accident.
NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OPTIONS
Integrity Spine and Orthopedics offers a full range of non-surgical options to treat back pain and spinal conditions. Our goal is to relieve your pain, restore normal function, and return you to your normal activities using the least invasive methods possible. Our conservative treatment plans include:
- Medications. Our orthopedic providers may recommend drug therapy with over-the-counter or prescription medications to relieve pain.
- Physical therapy. A physical therapy regimen will guide you through exercises to strengthen the core, low back and leg muscles that stabilize and support the spine. Additionally, a therapist will help you improve flexibility, range of motion, balance, and posture. Finally, a therapist will show you home stretches and exercises that relieve pain and pressure on the spine.
- Corticosteroid injections. Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatories that relieve pain and inflammation caused by an injury or pinched nerve root. As steroid injection is not a permanent solution for pain, but it does buy you time to improve mobility and grow stronger in physical therapy while your body heals.
- Facet injections. A facet injection uses a mix of anesthetics and corticosteroids to relieve pain and inflammation stemming from the facet joints in the spine. The pain-relieving effects of a facet injection are temporary, but you’ll have a chance to resume normal activities, improve mobility, and get stronger in physical therapy — all of which contribute to long-term pain relief.
- Destruction via thermal ablation (DTA). DTA is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to burn (ablate) pain-transmitting nerves and block them from sending pain signals to the brain. It’s a very safe treatment method used to relieve chronic back, neck and arthritic pain. If the nerve tissue grows back, a DFA procedure can be repeated.
- Weight management and exercise. Carrying excess weight can lead to back pain, added stress on the spine, and accelerated degeneration of spinal discs and joints. Weight management — combined with regular exercise to maintain muscle and joint strength — can effectively relieve pain and help you live a healthy, active lifestyle.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE SPINE SURGERY
If conservative treatments aren’t effective, surgery is the next step. Integrity Spine and Orthopedics offers a wide range of minimally invasive spine surgeries to relieve debilitating pain from spinal conditions. Our surgeries are performed by board-certified surgeons in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) setting on an outpatient basis.
Minimally invasive techniques have made spine procedures safer, less painful, and more cost-effective for patients requiring surgical treatment. Using small incisions, small tools and advanced cameras to guide surgery causes less muscle and tissue damage, less internal trauma, and fewer complications than traditional open surgeries. Many of our patients experience less pain and stiffness after minimally invasive spine surgery, followed by a shorter recovery and rehabilitation period that gets them back to work and normal activities within a few weeks. Finally, outpatient surgeries in the surgery center setting eliminate overnight hospitalization costs.
There are multiple types of minimally invasive spine surgeries. Your doctor will walk you through available options based on your specific condition. Decompression surgeries aim to remove herniated discs, bone spurs, or pieces of bone that are compressing and irritating nerve roots or the spinal cord. Removing the source of pressure usually resolves symptoms like pain, weakness, numbness and tingling. Stabilization surgeries aim to stabilize the spine by preventing excessive movement that causes pain and instability.
